Unconcious Motivation: unconscious reasons for feelings and actions

Unconcious Dynamics: conflict between different systems in the brain leading to dreams, speech erros, jokes, etc.

  • Id: present at birth, instinctual, animalistic, does not distingush fantasy from reality, operates according to the Pleasure Principle
  • Ego: develops out of the id in infancy, understands reality and logic, mediator between id and superego
  • Superego: internalizatin of society's moral standards responsible for guilt

Psychosexual Stages Freud's stages of personality development associated with erogenous zones:

  • Oral (birth - 1 year)
  • Anal (1 - 3 years)
  • Phallic (3 - 5 years)
  • Latency (5 years - puberty)
  • Genital (puberty)

Fixation: an attempt to achieve pleasure as an adult in ways that are equivalent to how it was achieved in these stages

Oedipus Complex: a desire for sexual involvement with the parent of the opposite sex and a concomitant sense of rivalry with the parent of the same sex

Defense Mechanism Displacement: redirect energy and focus to more appropriate targets
